Day 1 - Wednesday 30th Nov 2011 (L,D)
Departing approximately 9am from Roma Street, Brisbane we travel the Cunningham Highway stopping at Aratula for a comfort stop, then crossing the Great Dividing Range, on to Warwick for lunch. We continue west through Inglewood on to Goondiwindi for a break then travel the Newell Highway heading south to Moree for an overnight stay at the Dragon Phoenix Motel.
Day 2 - Thursday 1st Dec 2011 (B,MT,L,D)
This morning we head south on Newell Highway travelling through Narrabri, a prosperous modern country town servicing a large and highly productive agricultural district in the heart of the rich Namoi Valley. We continue on arriving at Pilliga Pottery for lunch and tour of the extensive ceramics workshop and gallery. The Pilliga collection houses Australian made pottery that ranges from large garden planters, kitchen ware and terracotta earthenware to collector art pieces. Each piece is created to the highest quality and is handmade from clays gathered from the Pilliga region. Our afternoon takes us to Dubbo, travelling via the friendly country town of Coonabarabran. Arrive and check in at the Cattleman’s Motor Inn, Dubbo.
Day 3 - Friday 2nd Dec 2011 (B,L,D)
Our first stop today is the Western Plains Zoo which depicts a wild and wonderful slice of Africa with animals located across wide open spaces. Here we collect a guide who comes on board for an informative wildlife zoofari around the zoo grounds, followed by lunch. We leave Dubbo heading south on the Mitchell Highway bound for Cowra. Arrive and check in at the Aalana Motor Inn for a 2 night stay.
Day 4 - Saturday 3rd Dec 2011 (B,L,D)
Today we visit the Cherry Festival in Young. A fabulous day offering a full program including Farmers Markets, Car Show, Busking Competitions and Dog Trials. We will visit Poppa’s Fudge and Jam Factory for a demonstration and taste test before our lunch at the Willows Restaurant. Our afternoon takes us to Ballinaclash Orchard and Cellar Door where you can purchase your own cherries and stone fruit. The day concludes after the Cherry Festival Street Parade, one of the largest street parades in regional Australia.
Day 5 - Sunday 4th Dec 2011 (B,L,D)
Departing Cowra we head east on the Mid Eastern Highway arriving at Abercrombie House for tour and lunch. This fascinating 40 room historic mansion was originally the home of the Stewart family - Bathurst pioneers, and is now the home of the Morgan family who bought it in 1969 and have spent almost thirty years on a program of restoration and redecoration. Our afternoon takes us on the Sofala Road to Mudgee, where we stop for the night at the beautiful Parklands Resort.
Day 6 - Monday 5th Dec 2011 (B,L,D)
We leave Mudgee this morning for a visit to Mudgee Honey Haven for tastings and an opportunity to purchase local home-made products. We then head north via Gulgong and Coolah, through the rich wheat, sheep and beef farming districts. We arrive at Gunnedah for lunch and then head east to the city of Tamworth, stopping at the Big Guitar, renowned for one of the best displays of country music memorabilia. We then head up the Moonbi Range passing through Uralla towards our destination, and overnight stay at Armidale. Overnight stay, at Quality Hotel Powerhouse.
Day 7 - Tuesday 6th Dec 2011 (B,MT,L)
Travelling north from Armidale we travel through Guyra, Glenn Innes and on to Tenterfield for a cuppa and leg stretch. Across the border at Wallangarra and into Queensland then past the grape growing districts of Ballandean, and the stone fruit and apple growing areas of Stanthorpe and The Summit. The descent from this cool climate is obvious as you travel down to the ‘Rose and Rodeo’ city of Warwick, where we break for lunch. We depart via the Cunningham Ranges for Brisbane.
