Stanthorpe Region
Day 1 - Thu 22 Dec 2011 (MT,L,D)
We depart from Roma St Busbay, Brisbane, at 7.30 am and travel along the Cunningham Highway, past the rich fertile crop growing region of the Lockyer Valley. We climb the Great Dividing Range, arriving at Bestbrook Mountain Resort for morning tea. We continue through Warwick and travel the New England Highway through the Granite Belt, stopping for lunch at the Bramble Patch Berry Farm. We travel south crossing the border at Wallangarra, through Tenterfield and on to Deepwater for a short break. We continue through Glenn Innes, Guyra and on to Armidale for our first night staying at the luxurious Quality Hotel Powerhouse.
Day 2 - Fri 23 Dec 2011 (B,L,D)
This morning we track south to Uralla, the district of Bush Ranger ‘Captain Thunderbolt’. We follow his path as we travel ‘Thunderbolt’s Way’ through Walcha and climb the range through Nowendoc taking in the beautiful scenery and views from the Giro State Forest ridge road. An opportunity to get some great snapshots of ‘The Barrington Tops’ before descending into the valley and on to Gloucester for lunch. Our afternoon takes us travelling south along Bucketts Way to Dungog and into the North Hunter Valley region. Arrive and check in at the Mercure Resort Hunter Valley Gardens for 3 nights.
Day 3 - Sat 24 Dec 2011 (B,MT,L,D)
First on our agenda this morning is the Richmond Vale Railway Museum, where we board a train with local tour guide who will explain the history of the trains and how they served the district. Afterwards, we take time out for some morning tea before we head off to the coast skirting the north end of the beautiful Lake Macquarie and on to Swansea for lunch. Afterwards we head back to Pokolbin to the Hunter Valley Gardens for a guided train tour. After dinner we return to the Hunter Valley Gardens for the Christmas Lights Spectacular. This year there will be enough lights to cover a football oval and 19km of string lights. Other features include scenes from the Jurassic Park era with fearsome dinosaurs and lava filled volcanoes, scenes from The North Pole, cactus light display, fountain firework lights, cherry blossom trees, a larger than life nativity scene and even a touch of Sydney thrown in with the famous Sydney Harbour scene created in stunning lights.
Day 4 - Sun 25 Dec 2011 (B,L,D)
Merry Christmas! This morning take time to relax before we enjoy a fabulous Christmas Day buffet lunch consisting of a wonderful selection of Traditional and Seafood fare. Afterwards relax around the pool, or walk off lunch strolling around the beautifully presented gardens, or perhaps a taste of the local wine.
Day 5 - Mon 26 Dec 2011 (B,MT,L,D)
Departing the Hunter region we head for home via the New England Highway and travel through Singleton, Muswellbrook and on to Scone for a leg stretch and morning tea. We then head northward through Murrurundi, Willow Creek and on to Nundle for a guided tour of the Nundle Woollen Mills. Afterwards, we cross the road for some country cooking with lunch at ‘The Peel Inn’. After lunch we head north along Fossickers Way passing the Chaffey Dam and on to the New England Highway, up the Moonbi Range passing through Uralla, back in to Armidale for another night of luxury at Quality Hotel Powerhouse.
Day 6 - Tue 27 Dec 2011 (B,MT,L)
Travelling north from Armidale we travel through Glenn Innes and on to Tenterfield, where we stop for a cuppa and then cross the border at Wallangarra. We travel through the grape growing districts of Ballandean and apple growing areas of Stanthorpe. The descent from this cool climate is obvious as we travel down to the ‘Rose and Rodeo’ city of Warwick, our lunch stop today. We then descend the Cunningham Ranges back in to Brisbane, arriving approximately 4.30pm.
Deposit required to secure this booking $400pp.
