Day 1 (L,D)
Departing from your pick-up point we head south to the home of the Big Banana, Coff’s Harbour where we break for lunch. Later we take a short break in beautiful Armidale before heading onto the northern tablelands to Tamworth stopping at the ‘Big Guitar’, renowned for one of the best displays of country music memorabilia. Each year Tamworth attracts around 50,000 music fans as host of the second biggest country music festival in the world! Tonight relax at the Armidale Country Comfort Inn.
Day 2 (B,MT,L,D)
Leave the tunes of Tamworth behind and travel to Australia’s Horse Capital – Scone, enjoy morning tea in this picturesque farming region before heading through Owens Gap to the far west of the Hunter Valley to Merriwa. Originally built to support the flourishing local 19th Century gold mines, Merriwa then turned its focus to the wool industry when the gold dried up. After lunch we travel through picturesque Turill to Mudgee for a 3 night stay at the Parklands Resort, Mudgee.
Day 3 (B,L,D)
Today we visit the ‘Town on the Ten Dollar Note’ – Gulgong; we discover the Pioneer Museum encompassing the history of the region including the Gold Mining era, Victorian times and the birth of local agriculture. After a break for lunch take time out to learn about Gulgong’s most famous son, Henry Lawson at the Henry Lawson Centre before returning to Mudgee.
Day 4 (B,L,D)
Taste some of the local golden nectar and watch the bees hard at work at the Honey Haven this morning. Next we visit Burnbrae Winery for a guided tour and wine tasting, followed by a lovely lunch set amongst the oak barrels. Take time out in the afternoon to discover Mudgee, visit ‘Mandurah at the Railway’, a co-operative gallery displaying a wide range of quality arts and crafts.
Day 5 (B,MT,L,D)
Leaving Mudgee behind this morning we travel north to Coonabarabran, home to Siding Spring Observatory. This is Australia’s foremost optical astronomy research centre and home of the giant 3.9 m mirror Anglo Australian telescope. Travel through the Pillinga Nature Reserve to our lunch stop today in the heart of the rich Namoi Valley, Narrabri. Our day concludes at Goondiwindi, where we check in at Goondiwindi Motel, for a two night stay.
Day 6 (B,L,D)
This morning we visit a famous Australian Horse Cutting property. We learn about the skills in horse cutting and see how they work their beautiful horses. We head back in to town for a guided tour of the newly restored Victoria Hotel then hear the history of Gunsynd, right from the forming of the syndicate, to his famous racing history. This tour ends with lunch and cool refreshments in the best seat in Goondiwindi! This afternoon return to the Goondiwindi Motel.
Day 7 (B,MT,L)
Our first stop today is the border town of Bonshaw on the Dumaresq River, once the heart of a thriving tobacco industry. Then we climb through the open grasslands toward the New England Plateau, and break for lunch at the Tenterfield Golf Club before heading home.
