Day 1 (MT,L,D)
Departing from your pick up point we travel the Cunningham Highway through to Aratula for a leg stretch and quick cuppa before continuing on into the Southern Darling Downs to Warwick for lunch. Departing Warwick we break at Inglewood, the hub of the olive industry and renowned producers of sheep, cattle, timber, lucerne hay and grapes. Our day concludes in the home of the legendary Gunsynd, Goondiwindi, where we check in at the Goondiwindi Motel, for an overnight stay.
Day 2 (B,L,AT,D)
Crossing into New South Wales we travel south through Moree into the heart of the rich Namoi Valley to Narrabri for a lunch stop on the banks of the Namoi River. Later we pass through the Pillinga Nature Reserve en-route to Coonabarabran, in the foothills of the Warrumbungles and then on to our destination for today, Dubbo. Arrive and check-in at Cattleman’s Country Motor Inn.
Day 3 (B,MT,L,D)
Travelling south our first stop today is the CSIRO Observatory in Parkes, see the giant radio telescope that received the transmission of the first moon landing and enjoy morning tea in the shadow of “The Dish”. We pass through Forbes, the site of the biggest gold robbery in Australia’s history and stop in West Wyalong for a picnic lunch. We take in beautiful Wagga Wagga, the Garden City of the South and The Rock before arriving at the Quality Hotel on Olive, Albury for a 3 night stay.
Day 4 (B,L,D)
Today we head toward the High Country along the Kiewa Valley Highway to Mt Beauty. We stop to hear about the Hydro Electric Scheme and the surrounding district. Next we head up the mountain through Bogong and onto the High Plains at Falls Creek. Weather permitting, we can visit Wallace’s Hut, built by the Wallace Brothers, the oldest hut still standing in the Bogong High Plains. Our afternoon takes us travelling the picturesque ‘Tawonga Gap’ Road to the beautiful town of Bright, to see the colourful autumn clad roads to Myrtleford and on to the Historical Town of Beechworth. Return to Quality Hotel on Olive.
Day 5 (B,L,D)
After breakfast we board the coach for a tour of the local district including the Hume Weir. We travel the Murray Valley Highway along Lake Hume towards the town of Tallangatta, back track slightly through to Yackandandah for morning tea. All aboard and it is onto Beechworth and Wangaratta for lunch, then travel north to the wine district of Rutherglen. We visit one of the oldest vineyards in the district before we make our way to Chiltern and on to Wodonga then Albury to our accommodation.
Day 6 (B,L,D)
Leaving Albury we head north along the Olympic Highway to the historic railway town of Junee where we visit the eerie Monte Cristo House, officially Australia’s most haunted house. Our lunch stop today is Gundagai nestled between scenic Mt Parnassus and the Murrumbidgee River. We visit the ‘Dog on the Tucker Box’ at Snake Gully, and then continue through Wombat and Young to Cowra where we check-in to the Cowra Motor Inn for an overnight stay.
Day 7 (B,L,D)
Our journey today takes us through Blayney and on to Bathurst where we take the opportunity to do a circuit of Mount Panorama Race Track (by coach). We continue north passing through the old gold mining town of Sofala and into the wine district town of Mudgee. We visit Burnbrae Winery for a guided tour and wine tasting, followed by a lovely lunch set amongst the oak barrels. A leisurely afternoon drive takes us to the Gunnedah Mackellar Motel for an overnight stay.
Day 8 (B,MT,L,D)
This morning we visit the Nundle Woollen Mill, for a tour of the mill, including the operation of the antique machinery. A short stroll through this quaint, picturesque town takes us to the beautiful historic Peel Inn for lunch. Heading north on the New England Highway passing Tamworth and Armidale we find ourselves in the heart of the New England Tablelands in the charming rural town of Glen Innes known for its parks, autumn colours and stately heritage-listed buildings. We check in to the New England Motor Lodge for an overnight stay.
Day 9 – Monday (B,L)
This morning we visit the Standing Stones celebrating Australia’s Celtic pioneers. Heading north from Glen Innes we travel the New England Plateau to Tenterfield viewing ‘The Saddler’s Shop’ and taking a look at the ‘Cork Tree’, said to be the largest in Australia. We continue on to Stanthorpe and enjoy lunch at the beautiful Summit Estate Wines before returning home.
